Bill Sohl, K2UNK, has been a ham for 0ver 40 years. First licensed as a novice in 1957 he upgraded a year later to
technician. At the encouragement of a local ham, Bill put in the practice time needed to
upgraded General in 1992 and then to Advanced in 1993. Bill has passed Element 4B and will be upgrading to Amateur Extra Class in April
2000.
Bill's early ham radio experiences as a teenager led him to a long-term career in telecommunications. He has worked
for IBM, US Navy (enlisted E-5 electronic technician), AT&T Long Lines, AT&T
Headquarters, Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), and Lucent Technology. He is now a network planning systems engineer at
Lucent's Holmdel, NJ Bell Labs facility.
Bill has also been involved with local government in his home town since 1987. He is in his third term as a
councilman and is, for 2000, the council President. Bill's involvement with the political process
has been put to use by his serving as a Local Government Liaison (LGL) for the ARRL. Bill was an active team member of the ARRL's
successful efforts to end a 50 year old "anti-scanner" law in the state of NJ. Bill has been active in local RACES
within his home town and for the county.
Bill was one of the first members of NCI and has been a director of NCI since the Board of Directors was formed.
Asked why he wants to be re-elected to the NCI BOD, Bill simply notes: "We have made great
strides forward in ending morse testing in the USA, but the job is not finished and I'd like to be a part of the team that completes that
task". Bill sees the next major NCI effort focusing on ending the ITU S25.5 treaty Requirement for Morse.
